And now for something completely different... Note, this is not a repeating watch! 1922 Elgin Open Face Pocket Watch with Modified Dial in a Swing out 14k Solid Gold Roy Case with Gilded Silver Relief Sculpture with Diamonds and single Ruby Applied to Case Back. Because I do not believe (or even remotely suspect) that Elgin, or the Roy Watch Case Co. Ever undertook such a watch design, I will take a stab at explaining how such an unusual watch might have come into existence....
In the 1920's Opera watches were very popular. So was Art Nouveau design, along with fancy enamel watch faces and Neo-classicism. It was the Roaring 20's, the Age of Jazz and Opulence. Maxfield Parrish, Greek and Renaissance Revival.
So in this cultural milieu I guess it made sense to take a Stock--but Very Reliable--Elgin 12s Swing-out Open face Pocket watch and modify it into The Ultimate Opera watch. (Probably a hit with the speakeasy crowd). So for some particulars: The dial of the watch is Blue and White Enamel with gold or Gilt Jacquards that were probably taken from an Ca.
The baton hands are gilded paint. I Repeat: Note THIS WATCH DOES NOT REPEAT! The back of the watch is a Truly Beautiful Hand Sculpted Art Nouveau Beauty done in Gilded Silver with diamond accents and a lone Cabochon Ruby. This Silver relief Sculpture was probably Soldered onto the case back of the 1922 Elgin. I can only guess at the age of the Sculpture but probably the same realm as the Dial--late 18th, early 19th century.
A side note to collectors: If you were to add this watch to your collection you could reasonably rest assured that no one else will produce the identical watch and say, But what do you think of mine?
