A most unusual and rare movement by Edward Daniel Johnson, 9 Wilmington Square, London. Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty and serial number 17836. He is listed in Brian Looms Watch and Clockmakers of the World to Circa 1844 but with a Google search I have located the following information on this very destinguished maker. Edward Daniel Johnson was a respected London watch and marine chronometer maker. He was a founder member and vice President of the British Horological Institute, which was formed in June 1858.

As you can see in the pictures it is very clean with bright original gold gilding. It is the only fusee movement which I have seen where it has key winding and setting on the rear and the addition of wheels and a lever to enable these functions to be carried out by a winding button and possibly a pin on the case rim.

In addition it is a chronograph with a fully functioning stop, start and fly back sweep seconds hand, controlled by a push pin at the edge of the dial which function well. You can see from the picture with the dial removed (to check what it really was) that it is of a higher than normal quality with capped jewels on the escape wheel and lever. The balance is running with a good action and is loaded with gold timing screws. It has an undamaged and unmarked white ceramic dial measuring 43.9mm diameter approx.

With the original blued steel hands. It has been marked off to fit into a hunting type case and is a bit unusual with the sub seconds dial at 9 O'c and the 60 sec. A very nice, quite rare and collectable movement which would be an excellent addition to any collection or a very valuable watch if re-cased.
