Here is an 18 size Columbus Watch Co "Columbus King" 23j OF SW LS Pocket Watch movement. The serial # of 503221 puts this watch at about 1898. These are not common watches, being listed with one star in the Price Guide. At some point someone replaced the center wheel, escape wheel, and pallet with ones from another lower grade Columbus.
In so doing, they filed the foot of the balance so it would give clearance to the center wheel gear. This is not visible from the outside. The pallet and escape wheel have too much endshake and this causes the watch to stop when being carried. I have tried and tried to repair it, I even sent it to another watchmaker for adjustment.
Columbus Parts for the better grades are just about impossible to find. The plates are in Very Good condition with no major issues, there is some small oxide on the steel work, but that is it. The dial is almost perfect - there are no hairlines or fractures, just some very small edge chips - and that is a VERY difficult thing to find on Columbus dials - esp the ones marked for Columbus King. The hands are very good with just a small amount of bluing loss. As I said before, I can wind, and set the watch. Dial up it will run and keep good time.
