Fehrenback Bros Working Pocket Watch Movement (Rotherhams) With Gold Dial (BS71). Please see photographs for condition -the pictures form an important part of the description. Movement measures 35.76mm on the dial side (34.5mm dial approx) and 34mm on the reverse side.

Movement is working, it winds and ticks away happily. Retailed by Fehrenbach Brothers, but made by Rotherhams in Coventry (stamp under dial) with superb gold dial. The scarcity of this watch comes with the dial. On the reverse it is stamped T.

This is for Thomas Batting, or Joseph Thomas Batting (his full name). Here is a little about him. An other distinct loss to the horological trades is to be noted in the lamented death of Thomas Batting - gold and silver dial finisher, of Coventry, at the age of seventy four years. He was apprenticed to Williamson of upper charles street, clerkenwell, became manager to Bovey of Corporation Row, and married Mr Bovey, s daughter.

Finding that the Swiss could beat us in cheapness and syle of work, he went to Geneva to see their methods and to make improved engines and machines for frosting the grounds of the dials also dial painting machines and in all parts of dial making to bring new and improved tool to bear. His dials were the flattest and most delicate in finish and were the least trouble of all dials to fit to the movement and the colouring was his own secret and has never been equalled his widow carries on the business. There are 3 dials by Batting in the V&A museum - one is in silver, the other two in gold.

The dial does have some small marks which I have tried to capture in the pictures but is in superb condition compared to others I have seen. A fine rarity and unique piece of horological history.
