Special 17 jewel movement 18s antique pocket watch. Watch case is hallmarked Keystone coin silver very heavy 5.50 troy ounces.

Watch Co Waltham serial number 79901 dates this pocket watch to 1893. Movement is a model number 79 marked J. First quality nickel movement, 17 jewels in gold settings, safety pinion, hardened and tempered breguet hairspring, compensation balance adjusted to heat, cold positions and isochronism, patent regulator and double sunk dial.

This movement is especially adapted for railway service the dial is marked WALTHAM. The regulator is a Matheson model patented April 14 1893 by William M. The American Waltham AWW Co. Serial number 79901 pocket watch database indicates this serial number coincides with a 1857 key wind PSB 11 jewel movement. After researching all of the different American watch manufactures databases for this serial number J.

Special movement I found this model to be the center of controversy in the late 1890's. One of the founders of U. Woerd formerly superintendent of the AWW Co. In 1885 a new factory was constructed and the directors of the new company wanted to name the company Waltham Watch Company. A suit was filed by the American Waltham Watch Company AWW Co.

Use of the Waltham name on competitors pocket watches was prohibited in 1899. It was a pocket watch marked J. Watch Co both located in Waltham Mass. Located in Boston were dealers in watches, jewelry and other articles marked J.
